W & J Plasterers have experience in applying all forms of external render around the Lancashire & Cumbria areas. There are four main types of finish outlined below. Each has its unique look which is useful when trying to blend new render/dash with existing buildings.

External Services Include:

K-Rend

K-Rend is the UK’s largest independent pre-mixed silicone render manufacturer.

The K-Rend silicone range incorporates silicone water repellants as an integral part of the cement render system.

This silicone technology imparts a high degree of water repellency to the render surface while allowing water vapour (air) to pass through the render enabling the substrate to breathe.

The water repellant surface ensures a freshly rendered appearance for an extended period. The finish is drier and thus more resistant to algae growth and the natural phenomenon of lime bloom.

All K-Rend renders are pre-coloured, with a wide range of colours to choose from,

Pebble Dashing

The term pebble-dashing is often associated with the application of small stones that are seemingly stuck to a render on the outside of properties throughout the United Kingdom. Other names used to describe the process are Dry-dashing, Harling and roughcasting. It is a finish that according to Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud, is a building material for which “a revival is long overdue”.

The functions provided by a pebble dash finish include:

  • Improved water shedding properties
  • Gives good impact resistance
  • Provides a low maintenance decorative finish
  • Protects the substrate
  • Gives architects and designers a wide choice of colour & texture

Wetdash (Roughcasting or Harling)

It is a traditional render which incorporates an aggregate of small evenly sized pebbles into the mix. Roughcast is a popular alternative to dry dash, especially in the Scottish regions, whereby a flat basecoat is applied followed by a through-coloured slurry coat which when evenly applied, provides an attractive, watertight, textured finish. Wet Dash is a cementitious product incorporating silicone technology to produce a beautiful through-colour render with excellent water-resistant properties. Suitable for coastal, suburban and rural environments. Produced by throwing a wet mix of granite chippings (usually 6mm to dust) and cement (1:1 mix) against the smooth trowelled (but not floated) top coat of render while it is still green. The roughcast mix can be modified with sand to give the required consistency.

Smooth Float Finish

Produced by rubbing the trowelled surface of the render using a wooden (or plastic) float or sponge to give a smooth finish. This is done after the top coat has taken up and become ‘green’. As the floating action draws the weak laitance (cementitious liquid) to the surface, there is a tendency for cracking to occur while drying is taking place. For this reason, float finish is usually associated with masonry paint finishes which fill the fissures (small cracks) and help prevent damage. The extent of cracking is typically related to the shrinkage characterises of the sand.

Internal Plastering

Before plasterboards can be applied W & J Plasterers have to ensure there is a suitable framework in place. Through experience, W & J Plasterers have found GypLyner wall lining systems provide a solid framework.
